Aquamarine is named after the color of sea water. It is blue to blue – green (greenish blue) and also a member of beryl family. Aquamarine has a Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8, making it one of a harder gemstone. As a member of beryl mineral family, it has a chemical composition of Be3 Al2 Sl6 O16.
The color of the Aquamarine is caused by Iron and as Iron can occur in two oxidation states Ferrous (Fe2+) is responsible for blue and Ferric (Fe3+) is responsible for yellow. Mostly the combination produces greenish blue and also natural Aquamarines are greenish blue color.
Aquamarine is actually found in granite pegmatites. Its crystal system is hexagonal (trigonal) and most people knows about Aquamarine as it is the birthstone of March. It is also valued as a stone of youth and happiness.
